Enabling Tax<\/h2>\n

To access the tax settings screens, they first need to be enabled.<\/p>\n

  1. Go to: WooCommerce > Settings > General.<\/li>\n
  2. Select the Enable Taxes and Tax Calculations checkbox.<\/li>\n
  3. Save changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Configuring Tax Options<\/h2>\n

    To start\u00a0configuring taxes:<\/p>\n

    Go to:\u00a0WooCommerce > Settings > Tax<\/strong>. This tab is only visible if taxes are enabled.<\/p>\n

    The\u00a0Tax<\/strong>\u00a0tab displays several options that can be set\u00a0to suit your needs \u2014 settings you choose are based on the tax jurisdiction under which your store is located.<\/p>\n

    Prices Entered With Tax<\/h2>\n

    This option is perhaps the most important when managing taxes in your store, as it determines how you input product prices later on.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • \u201cYes, I will enter prices inclusive of tax\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0means that all catalog prices are input using your store\u2019s base tax rate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      For example, in the UK you would input prices inclusive of the 20% tax rate e.g. You enter a product price of \u00a39.99 that\u00a0includes \u00a31.67 tax. A customer in the UK would pay \u00a39.99 as defined, and\u00a0a customer in the US would only pay \u00a38.32.<\/p>\n

        \n
      • \u201cNo, I will enter prices exclusive of tax\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0would mean that your catalog prices need to be tax exclusive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Using the example from above, a UK shop would enter 8.32 at the product price. A tax of 20% would be applied on top of this during checkout making the amount payable \u00a39.99.<\/p>\n

        The tax calculation for tax-inclusive<\/strong>\u00a0prices is:<\/p>\n

        tax_amount = price - ( price \/ ( ( tax_rate_% \/ 100 ) + 1 ) )<\/code><\/p>\n

        The tax calculation for tax-exclusive<\/strong>\u00a0prices is:<\/p>\n

        tax_amount = price * ( tax_rate_% \/ 100 )<\/code><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        Display Prices in the Shop<\/h2>\n

        This option determines how prices are displayed in your shop\/catalog. Choose from\u00a0Including tax<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Excluding tax<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        We recommend setting this series of settings to\u00a0Excluding Tax<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0if prices are entered without tax, or\u00a0Including Tax<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0if prices are entered including tax.<\/p>\n

        Settings when prices are inclusive of tax<\/p>\n

        \"\"<\/p>\n

        Settings when prices are exclusive of tax<\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        If any of the 3 tax display settings (Prices entered with tax, Display prices in the shop, Display prices during cart and checkout) differ, a warning banner will appear to notify the user when the tax display settings are mismatched and in conflict. Clicking on \u201cUse recommended settings\u201d should change all the settings to be the same as the one set for \u201cPrices entered with tax\u201d.<\/p>\n

        \"\"<\/p>\n

        Shipping Tax Class<\/h2>\n

        In most setups, shipping tax class is inherited from the item being shipped, e.g., Shipping a reduced rate item such as\u00a0baby clothes would also use a reduced rate.\u00a0If this is not the case in your jurisdiction, choose a different tax class.<\/p>\n

        In the case of multiple tax rates in the order, the shipping tax will be applied as follows:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • If you have a product with the\u00a0Standard<\/code>\u00a0rate in the order, it will be used for the shipping regardless if this rate is high or low;<\/li>\n
        • If you don\u2019t have a product with the\u00a0Standard<\/code>\u00a0rate in the order, then the first rate found in the\u00a0Additional tax class<\/code>\u00a0section will be used for shipping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The goal is to make sure that your highest rate is listed the first in the\u00a0Additional tax class<\/code>\u00a0section if you don\u2019t use the\u00a0Standard<\/code>\u00a0class and if you need the highest tax rate to apply to shipping, for example.<\/p>\n

          Here is a setup to showcase it visually:<\/p>\n

          The\u00a0Standard<\/code>\u00a0class is there by default but\u00a0Tax A<\/code>,\u00a0Tax B<\/code>,\u00a0Tax C<\/code>\u00a0should be created for each tax class respectively. Note that it is not possible to delete the\u00a0Standard<\/code>\u00a0tax rate but you can leave it empty and it will be ignored:<\/p>\n

          Tax A<\/code>\u00a0(24%) \u2013 the highest rate listed the first:<\/p>\n
